The money around AI is repositioning faster than the models themselves.
In one weekend, Hugging Face, the hub where most open models live, began testing a sale at $13 billion, Nvidia entered talks to back Perplexity at a $30 billion-plus valuation, and Alibaba raised $10.2 billion in Hong Kong's largest-ever primary follow-on to fund what it calls "*full stack*" AI. Investor Gavin Baker meanwhile flagged Vercel data showing open-source models jumping from 28% to 62% of token share in two months. The pattern: as intelligence itself gets cheaper and more interchangeable, the lasting value migrates to the layers around it, the hubs, the agents, the chips and the capital. Today's issue is about who is buying those layers while they still can.
All the best,

Kim Isenberg

๐ต๏ธ AliExpress Caught Running Silent Audio Tracking
AliExpress has been running a silent Web Audio process that fingerprints your device, and muting the tab does not stop it. A developer noticed it on August 22 when Bluetooth headphones misbehaved while an AliExpress tab was open: a zero-volume script kept the audio pathway active and measured device-specific signal quirks, then combined them with canvas, WebGL and WebRTC data into a cookie-less device profile. Brave says it has blocked audio fingerprinting by default for over six years; AliExpress has not commented.
๐ tl;dr: Tracking has moved below the mute button, and only the browser can stop it.

๐ต Nvidia Weighs Perplexity Stake At $30 Billion-Plus
Nvidia is in talks to invest in Perplexity at a valuation above $30 billion, The Information reports, in a round that would lift the AI startup more than 50% above its financing from a year ago. Perplexity's annualized revenue has climbed past $750 million, from under $250 million at the start of the year, driven partly by Perplexity Computer, its agent that automates office work on a computer. The talks follow Nvidia's $6 billion licensing-and-hiring deal with Poolside and extend what The Information describes as its role as a kind of central bank for AI startups, putting billions into the companies that buy or rent its chips.
๐ tl;dr: Nvidia keeps converting chip dominance into equity in its own customers.

๐จ๐ณ Alibaba Raises $10 Billion In Record Share Sale
Alibaba raised HK$80 billion ($10.2 billion) in the largest primary follow-on offering ever by a Hong Kong-listed company, and every dollar is earmarked for AI. The company sold 710 million shares at HK$112.70, the world's third-largest follow-on this year after Alphabet's and Intel's, and says 100% of net proceeds go into "full stack" AI: chips, infrastructure and model development. The money arrives as quarterly capex nears $10 billion, June-quarter profit fell more than 75% to about $1.6 billion, and free cash flow swung to a $6.6 billion outflow.
๐ tl;dr: Alibaba is selling stock to fund the AI race, and the clock on returns is already running.

๐ฌ Watch This
With Hugging Face testing a $13 billion exit (today's Featured Story), hear the CEO himself. Clรฉment Delangue joined Bloomberg Tech after an OpenAI test agent broke out of its sandbox and into Hugging Face's systems, talking through what he has called an "unprecedented" hack, his demand for "radical transparency", and how an open platform defends itself. A calm founder describing the week his neutral hub became everyone's problem.

"Open source has gone from 28% token share to 62% token share [on Vercel] over the last 2 months."
โ Gavin Baker, Managing Partner & CIO of Atreides Management, on X (Aug 23)
Baker is reading Vercel's AI Gateway data, charted by Vercel CEO Guillermo Rauch, and calls the swing "super impressive" because OpenAI's and Anthropic's combined usage still accelerated in July. Open weights are gaining share in a market where everyone is still growing.

Anthropic appears to be quietly testing two unreleased models, claude-marshmallow-eap and claude-melon-eap, with early-access developers; testers report Marshmallow already chats better than Opus 5, though neither reaches Fable level. Speculation points to Opus 5.1 and Sonnet 5.1 checkpoints; Anthropic has not commented.

The Switzerland Of AI Is Up For Sale
The Takeaway
๐ Hugging Face is exploring a sale at $13 billion or more and has hired a bank; talks are early and no bidder is named (Business Insider)
๐ That is nearly triple the $4.5 billion valuation from its 2023 round backed by Salesforce, Nvidia, Google and Amazon
๐ The platform hosts 3M+ models and 1M+ datasets and serves roughly half the Fortune 500
๐ The timing is loaded: weeks after an OpenAI test agent breached its systems, with Stripe's $8 billion OpenRouter purchase as the comparable
Almost every open AI model in the world lives in one place, and that place may be about to get an owner. Hugging Face, the New York platform where labs publish and developers download open models, has hired a bank and is exploring a sale at $13 billion or more, Business Insider reported on Sunday. The talks are early, no bidder has been named, and the company may still decide to stay independent. But the fact that founder Clรฉment Delangue is testing the market at all turns the industry's most neutral piece of infrastructure into an asset with a price.

(TechCrunch)
The price tells you how central the hub has become. Hugging Face last raised in 2023 at $4.5 billion, in a round led by Salesforce and joined by Nvidia, Google, Amazon and Intel; $13 billion is nearly triple that. The platform now hosts more than 3 million models and 1 million datasets, sells subscriptions, enterprise hosting and compute, and is used by roughly half the Fortune 500, Delangue told TechCrunch in July. And the middle layer of AI is being repriced: Stripe's $8 billion purchase of model marketplace OpenRouter is the standing comparable.

(TechCrunch)
The timing is the strange part. In July an OpenAI test agent escaped its sandbox and broke into Hugging Face's infrastructure, an incident Delangue called "unprecedented" while demanding "radical transparency" and $100 million in compute from OpenAI for community cyber defenses. A sale would also pose a question money cannot answer: the hub works because it belongs to no lab and hosts them all, and any buyer big enough to write a $13 billion check has interests of its own.
Why it matters: Whoever owns Hugging Face owns the distribution rail of open-source AI, just as open weights crossed a majority of token share on platforms like Vercel.

The chart: OpenAI's own enterprise telemetry, republished by a16z: weekly active enterprise Codex users by job title, indexed to February 2026. Legal leads at 108x, sales and recruiting sit at 41x, marketing at 26x, while engineering grows just 5x.
The lesson: The fastest enterprise growth for OpenAI's coding agent is now happening outside engineering. Lawyers, who never touched developer tools, are adopting an agent that reads, drafts and cross-checks documents all day. It turns out the agent interface fits any work made of text.
The caveat: Growth indexed to February flatters small bases: legal started near zero, so 108x says as much about how few lawyers used Codex last winter as about how many do now, and engineering's 5x reflects a base that was already large. The numbers are OpenAI's own (OAI Signals, Aug 12).

๐ธ Your Broker Will Now Take Orders From Your AI
โก Bottom line: Brokers from Robinhood to Public now let AI agents plan and execute trades on customer accounts.
๐ก Why it matters: One brokerage analyst expects agents to place the majority of trades by number by the end of next year.
๐ What it means: Markets built around human attention are about to meet investors that never sleep.
You can now hand your brokerage account to an AI agent. In May, Robinhood switched on agentic trading: customers open a dedicated agent account with its own wallet, connect an AI assistant such as OpenClaw, and let it place orders while every trade pings their phone. Public is building agents in-house that run whole investing workflows once you approve them, and startups like Podium Markets sell AI analysts that watch portfolios across brokerages. Public co-founder Leif Abraham puts it plainly: "AI agents can actually execute investment strategies on your behalf."

(Robinhood via TechCrunch)
The projections are aggressive. Devin Ryan, who covers brokers for Citizens, estimates agentic finance could lift transaction volumes roughly tenfold: a retail investor who trades twice a month might eventually trade twenty times a day. "By the end of next yearโฆ the majority of transaction activity by number of trades will be done by agents," he told CNBC.
Early reality is messier. Robinhood shipped its launch with a long disclosure warning that agents can misinterpret instructions, act on stale data and behave unpredictably. One retail experimenter told CNBC his automated agent "was just losing money consistently"; another used Claude to screen undervalued stocks but still reviewed every pick by hand before buying.

(IBTimes)
The unsolved problem is drift: an agent that quietly stops following the strategy it was given. "If the agent is not behaving as modeledโฆ that becomes a risk for the firm," Ryan says. Nobody has settled who pays when it goes wrong, and that answer will decide how fast the machines take over the order flow.
